5 Time Warped Wonders of Portugal

One of Portugal's most superbly maintained medieval towns; Evora is a beguiling spot to dive into the glorious past. Behind the fourteenth century fortified wall, Evora's slender paths lead to striking architectural works: an intriguing medieval church and cloisters ; the sensational pillars of the Templo Romano which is near to the spellbinding Roman showers, and a charming town square, once the site of some alarming scenes courtesy a ministerial tribunal set up by Pope Gregory.

Nestled on either side of the meandering Rio Gilao, Tavira is a captivating town. The remnants of a post, an old Roman bridge and a sprinkling of Gothic and Renaissance churches are among Tavira's capital attractions. Its charming series of eateries and guesthouses makes it an awesome base for getting acquainted with the Algarve's eastern range.

Encircled by a crenulated wall, Obidos' dazzling town centre is a labyrinth of cobblestoned boulevards and flower decorated; whitewashed houses trimmed with splashes of clear yellow and blue paint. It's a delightful spot to spend an evening, yet there are many motivations to stay overnight, as there's amazing lodgings including a château, which has now changed into one of Portugal's most luxurious hotels.

Coimbra

The medieval era capital of Portugal for more than a century, and site of the country's most prestigious college for around 500 years, Coimbra is talked about with much reverence in Portuguese history with nobility. Its museum tumbles down an incline in an astonishing setting on the east bank of the Rio Mondeg: it's a vividly colored canvass of structures spread around for over a centuries.

Like a diamond in the sky, the astonishing town of Monsanto towers high over the surrounding fields. A stroll around its steeply cobbled paths, lined with stone houses that seem to solidify with the stone strewn landscapes, is a strong motivation to come here. To revel Monsanto's rugged seclusion, climb the shepherds' courses above town to the condemned fortes, whose crumbled walls give magical panoramas of the adjoining territory.
