Chefchaouen could not
have been placed in a more beautiful setting. The city is nestled in Morocco’s
Rif mountains, which makes up for a perfect earthly background for its vibrant
blue houses, this is how the nature and mankind have conspired it to give an
otherworldly feeling. The town puts plenty on table from amazing hiking trails
to splendid streams ideal for plunging in and from finest cuisines to glitzy
shopping streets. -
The Chefchaouen first
served as a Moorish castle for exiles from Spain, built by Moulay Ali Ben
Moussa. With the passage of time it embraced Judaism and Christianity. The core
reasons behind the blue painted buildings is religious, the Jews believed that
dyeing prayer shawls with ‘Tekhelel’ brought the devotees closer to God and the
blue palette which you see today is the trickle-down effect of this ancient
tradition.

At present, Chefchaouen
is a mixed pot of cultures with barbaric tribes, Muslims and Jews being its
main residents. The tribes can be easily spotted with their typical cotton
clothing and multi-colored hats, embellished with bright threads.

Vibrant and colorful, Chefchaouen’s
medina is a delightful spot. Nestled in the winding hillside streets it’s a
tempting emporium for the shopaholics. Brass kettles and plates shimmer and hand-woven
sheets and shawls cover up the walls and tables. Heaps of Aztec-style bags and
Moroccan slippers are surrounded by hagglers.

carried away in shopping and end up making a hole in your pocket, make sure
that you are acquainted with the bargain culture of the markets. Get some hands
on the art of haggling and battle for the best possible prices.
